MY EXPERTISE

STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATIONS

Developing the appropriate message and stories to reach your audience.

For Texas Health Resources’ blog, I research and write articles on a variety of health and well-being topics important to the corporation’s patients and other audiences – from diet and exercise to common illnesses and timely topics.  For Black, Mann & Graham, I develop strategy and content for the firm’s social media program and a monthly newsletter to current and prospective clients.

ISSUES MANAGEMENT

Containing and minimizing issues that could disrupt the organization, like executive changes, M&As, succession plans.

When the North Texas Food Bank, one of the largest nonprofits in the area, announced the retirement of its long-time CEO, I developed a communications plan to minimize potential stakeholder perception that her departure would affect the operation and sustainability of the nonprofit.

CRISIS PLANNING

Developing a plan to react or manage a crisis to minimize the effect on your reputation and that of your stakeholders.

For American Airlines, I served as a member of its agency response team charged with handling crises, including crashes.  For AT&T (then Southwestern Bell), I was the first member of my agency team on the ground following the first case of domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, managing crisis communications for the telecommunications giant.

MEDIA RELATIONS

Gathering, packaging and placing a story with target news media to elevate your organization or its leadership.

With After8toEducate, I conceived a media plan to generate influencer awareness about the need to shelter homeless Dallas Independent School District students, featuring a prominent North Texas philanthropist.  For World Autism Awareness Month, I placed a TV news story to raise awareness about the importance of hiring individuals with disabilities.

CAUSE MARKETING

Raising awareness about worthy causes like alleviating hunger, tackling youth homelessness and the promoting the arts.

As CMO of the North Texas Food Bank, I managed the annual holiday campaign that generated millions for the nonprofit, and orchestrated the communications program to support its $55 million Stop Hunger Build Hope capital campaign of its kind.  For After8toEducate, I developed a communications strategy and assets to announce a first-of-its-kind initiative to provide a housing solution to homeless Dallas students.

 BRETT’S WORK SUCCESS

Brett advised executive level leadership on the initial media roll-out and communications of the After8toEducate collaborative initiative. I depended upon his dynamic expertise in working with multiple agency partners and steady guidance which resulted in broad-based coverage on a variety of media outlets.

Hillary E. Evans Executive Director, After8toEducate

“Working with Brett Gray at Weber Shandwick and at the North Texas Food Bank gave me a front row seat to learn from a gifted communicator. He is analytical, practical, has the ability to lay out a brilliant strategy and has done PR for a myriad of industries. From crisis work, to advocacy to media pitching, Brett is a top PR talent, and a joy to work with. My favorite phrase to hear Brett say is “this might be a crazy idea…” that usually meant that he had an out of the box plan that would make the client/leadership very happy.

Anna Kurian, Director, Marketing and Communications, North Texas Food Bank

TACA is an important arts leader in North Texas that is evolving to meet the dynamic needs of arts organizations. Brett has partnered with us in providing communication insight and strategy to support that evolution. He has been invaluable in helping focus and craft communications to our key constituencies that are informative and compelling. His knowledge, experience and insights are superb.

Wolford McCue President and Executive Director, The Arts Community Alliance (TACA)

Brett Gray was a colleague of mine in the eighties when we met on staff in the office of U.S. Senator Pete V. Domenici in Washington.  His considerable communications skills greatly enhanced the Senator’s work on behalf of New Mexico, and were most valuable to my own work.  I have closely followed Brett Gray’s career for close to 35 years now and am continuously in awe of his knowledge, energy, and creativity.

Benedicte Valentiner, Former General Manager of Blair House, The President’s Guest House, Washington D.C.

“Brett has been a collaborative partner helping us market our firm to current and prospective mortgage lending clients through our social media campaign and a monthly client newsletter. Both have proven to be an effective tool for us to better connect with our client, raise our brand profile and communicate the value. Black, Mann & Graham brings to our industry.”
